avatar=117_1410364626.jpgDangan Ronpa is a visual novel that’s similar to ace attorney, the game is about a group of students trapped in a school by a evil bear called Monokuma and the only way to get out of the school is killing each other. The game is split in two segments the school part where you can interact with people and objects, and then there’s the class trials, it’s when you are trying to find the culprit. The game has gotten a lot of praise since its release with a sequel called super Dangan Ronpa 2 and a spin off game on the vita.

• Capture 15 of the world’s best students: Check
• Lock them inside the walls of the most prestigious academy: Check
• Throw in a sadistic monochrome bear to keep things in order: Check
• Force them to kill each other: Check.
Danganronpa is a murder/mystery visual novel developed by Spike Chunsoft. The story is told from the point of view of main character, Naegi Makoto, who just received an invitation to join the prestigious Hope’s Peak Academy, the most prestigious school there is. Graduating from this school essentially means that you will succeed at everything you do, but graduating from a school might not be as easy as it seems…
Overseeing the school is the sadistic monochrome bear Monokuma (Monobear in the English version) who explains to the students their only way to graduate: commit murder. The only way a student will be able to graduate and subsequently leave Hope’s Peak Academy is to murder one of their fellow classmates and get away with it. If the innocent people find out who the killer is, the killer will be executed. But if the innocent pin the crime on the wrong person, then only the killer will graduate and the others will be killed.
Who will be the one to outsmart all of their fellow classmates?…

Gameplay:

The Gameplay in Danganronpa is divided into two parts: Exploration and the Class Trial.
The Exploration is self-explanatory; you walk around the academy, interact with objects, your classmates, and try to find clues as to why you were trapped there in the first place.
Where this game shines is in its Class Trial phase which can be divided into 2 parts: Investigation Phase and Class Trial. The Investigation Phase occurs right after a murder and it’s the part where you get to go around questioning your classmates and gathering clues in order to unravel the truth behind the who did it.
Now, here is where the game really stands out: The Class Trial.
Every Class Trial is fully voiced unlike the other parts of the game where the characters only say a few lines. There are various sections in the class trial such as the:
Non-Stop Debate: In this part you use the clues you have found to try and blow a hole in one of your classmate’s arguments, more things get added to the Non-Stop Debate as the game goes.
The next part comes in the form of a minigame called “Hangman’s Gambit” where you try to make a word to solve a mystery that has stopped everyone in their tracks or that might remind someone of something that was overlooked.
Next is the Machinegun Talk battles that come in the form of a small rhythm game where you press circle to lock on to the incoming arguments and triangle to shoot them down.
And the final part is the Closing Argument: Climax Logic where you put together all the events in the order that they happened based on what was discussed during the trial in order to point to the culprit.
There’s also a part where you accuse someone once enough information has been gathered to determine who the culprit is.

Story:

The story is almost perfect in my opinion, but it’s mainly targeted towards people who love a good mystery. If you’re expecting some comedy, romance, or slice of life, you’ll still find it but that’s very minimal. You can learn about each character’s backstory by interacting with them during Free-Time mode.

Graphics:

Danganronpa uses a mix of 3D environment with 2D sprites. The characters look like they’re cut out from a cardboard box in the 3D environment but that only helps to add more to the setting 😀
